NASCAR’s Stenhouse Jr. to Appear at Ollie’s Grand Opening

Racecar driver Rickey Stenhouse Jr. will be signing autographs for the first 250 people at the grand opening of Ollie’s Bargain Outlet on Grafton St. in Worcester on Oct. 16.

Ollie’s will open at 7:30 AM and staff will be distributing tickets to get Stenhouse’s autograph on a first come, first serve basis. Stenhouse will start signing autographs at 10 AM.

Stenhouse was the 2013 NASCAR Rookie of the Year and is the #17 Fastenal Ford driver for Roush Fenway Racing.

 

Indian Lake Re-Opens to Public

A public health advisory at Indian Lake has been lifted. 

A public health advisory was previously issued on Monday, Sept. 16 due to preliminary laboratory results of high levels of cyanobacteria (blue-green algae).

According to the City of Worcester, the most recent laboratory tests show that the naturally occurring algae count levels do not pose a public health risk and Indian Lake is now open for recreational activities.

Healey’s Office to Issue $1.4 Million in Heating Bill Assistance

On Wednesday, Attorney General Maura Healey announced that her office has opened the application period for the second year of a grant program to help Massachusetts residents pay or lower their monthly heating bills.

Each winter, tens of thousands of families across our state struggle to pay their heating bills,” Healey said. “This grant program will reach residents who aren’t already receiving assistance and make sure they have the financial support they need to stay warm during the cold months.”

The Natural Gas Fuel Assistance Grant Program will provide approximately $1.4 million in additional funding to programs that assist Massachusetts households in paying for their natural gas service. Approximately one in four low-income eligible households in the state receive assistance on their heating bills.

The grant program is open to programs run through state agencies, municipalities, charitable organizations, and nonprofit organizations.

 

24 Food Entrepreneurs to Graduate from Food Hub Program

The Worcester Regional Food Hub and the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce will celebrate the graduation of 24 food entrepreneurs from the  Launching Diverse Food Entrepreneurs in Worcester program.

The program was funded by a $65,000 Urban Agenda Grant from the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing & Economic Development. Supplemental funding was also provided by The Health Foundation of Central Massachusetts.

“Incubating new entrepreneurs is a major priority of ours,” said Chamber President and CEO Timothy P. Murray. “This includes those emerging entrepreneurs in the food sector who will create jobs and further the energy of local restaurants and citywide food scene.”

The event will take place on Monday, Oct. 7 from 7 PM to 8PM at Greendale People’s Church, the site of the Food Hub’s commercial kitchen.

Two neighborhood meetings are taking place tonight in Worcester [see list below] and the Worcester Police Dept. is encouraging residents to attend these meetings to stay up-to-date on what’s happening in their neighborhoods and to share any concerns or questions they may have.
