In today’s daily 5 Things You Need to Know feature, ThisWeekinWorcester.com explores five important items and stories that Worcester and Central Massachusetts residents should keep a close eye on.

These five things can cover a whole range of subjects and issues that we feel are pertinent to understanding what’s going on in the city and the cities and towns surrounding Worcester.

In today’s edition – Friday, July 31 – D’Errico’s is expanding to Cambridge St. this weekend, the state allocated $50 million from CARES Act towards education, the Paxton police warn of a COVID-19 scam, JetBlue is blocking seats for social distancing, and Massachusetts’ workforce is recovering better than most states.

D’Errico’s Expands to Cambridge St.

D’Errico’s Market is opening a second location at 127 Cambridge St. on Saturday, August 1.

The family owned business first opened its doors at the corner of East Central St. and Shrewsbury St. in 1947. D’Errico’s is now bringing an old-fashioned butcher shop and specialty market to Cambridge St.

The Cambridge St. location will be open Thursday to Monday from 9 AM – 6 PM.

Baker Allocates $50 Million from CARES Act to Education

Governor Charlie Baker’s office announced on Thursday, July 30, that it will allocate $50 million in federal CARES Act funds to benefit education in elementary and secondary schools and colleges and universities.

The Governor has already allocated nearly $1 billion in federal funds within Massachusetts.

The funds allocated on Thursday will fund early literacy programs through Grade 3, expanded access to online courses, COVID-related reopening expenses and financial aid for low-income student attending public colleges.

Paxton Police Warn of COVID-19 Contact Tracing Scam

Paxton Police warn that some residents have received automated calls informing of exposure to someone with COVID-19.

The call stresses that the resident requires testing, has been in contact with someone with COVID-19 and must supply payment information to get tested.

Police recommend that residents who receive this call should end the call immediately.

Any individual who believes they may be exposed to COVID-19 should speak with their doctor.

JetBlue Blocking Seats Through September 8

To promote social distancing, JetBlue will be blocking middle seats on larger aircraft and most aisle seats on smaller aircraft for people flying alone from now until September 8.

Massachusetts Workforce Recovering Faster than 39 Other States In Last Week

A study conducted by WalletHub.com analyzed the rate at which the workforce of each state is recovering from the COVID-19 crisis.

The methodology used three metrics based on changes in unemployment claims over the last week and since the start of the COVID-19 crisis.

While Massachusetts reopened its economy slower than many states, recovery appears to be expanding.

Massachusetts is the 11th most-recovered state over the last week.

Oregon was the most recovered state while Florida was the least recovered state since last week.

Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis, Massachusetts is the 21st most recovered state. Connecticut has recovered the most of any state followed by Oregon at second most. The only state that has recovered more slowly than Florida is Georgia, which is the state with the slowest recovery.
