WORCESTER – The City of Worcester will host its annual Independence Day Celebration on Tuesday, July 2 at East Park on Shrewsbury St.
This year will mark the 25th annual consecutive year of Worcester’s annual Independence Holiday Concert and Fireworks at East Park [Cristoforo Colombo Park].
The park will open at 4 PM and pre-event festivities will start at 4:30 PM. Hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream, drinks, and more will be available for purchase in the refreshment area. Children’s activities, games and entertainment will take place from 4:30 – 6:30 PM.
The event is free and open to the public.
“I look forward to this event every year,” said Mayor Joseph M. Petty. “We’ve got a great roster of events coming up this summer across the city: concerts, road races, and of course our free summer camp for kids, Rec Worcester. There is so much going on at our museums and cultural institutions, I want everyone to get involved and enjoy everything our city has to offer. I want to thank everyone who comes out year after year and of course the sponsors who help our city kick off our summer.”
The Independence Day celebration will officially begin with a ceremonial flag-raising at 7:40 p.m. followed by a performance by the acclaimed Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra.
The Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra performance will feature patriotic and popular music and will conclude with Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture along with Sousa marches played during the course of a spectacular fireworks display.
“Our Independence Day Celebration is an annual tradition featuring an impressive display of fireworks above Cristoforo Columbus Park to the soundtrack of the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra. The entire community looks forward to this signature event which celebrates our nation’s independence,” City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. said.
The event is hosted by the City of Worcester, the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce, Discover Central Massachusetts (DCM), and the Massachusetts Symphony Orchestra, with lead sponsor: Fallon Health.
The rain date is scheduled for Wednesday, July 3.
