Stolen Statue Returned to Leicester Special Needs School

LEICESTER – A statue stolen from the McAuley Nazareth Home for Boys in Leicester has been located and returned to its rightful place.

As ThisWeekInWorcester.com previously reported, the statue which depicts Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, according to the New Testament and the Qur’an, was stolen overnight on Friday, July 24.

Leicester Police officers located the statue during a routine patrol on the grounds of the McAuley Nazareth facility on Sunday, July 26.

According to a McAuley Nazareth staff member, the statue was in the grass near a cemetery on the facility grounds where past Sisters who ran the school were laid to rest.

The Nazareth Home is a special education school and group home at 77 Mulberry St. It serves the needs of emotionally and behaviorally challenged youth between ages six to 18 and operates special education programs that serve residential and day students from kindergarten through 8th grade.

The McAuley Nazareth Home for Boys is a non-profit organization that first opened its doors as an orphanage in Worcester in 1865 and moved to Leicester in 1901. To donate, please visit the its Facebook page or current GoFundMe campaign.
