WORCESTER – The City of Worcester is looking to make upgrades to parking management and the user experience for metered parking in the city.
On Tuesday, March 23, the installation of multi-space parking meters will begin in the Canal District. The project will replace single-space meters throughout the city.
The multi-space meters are kiosk-style and expected to provide a more user-friendly experience for drivers. Similar devices are prominent in Boston and other cities.
Beyond multi-space meters, City Manager Ed Augustus’ office expects its proposal for new parking management ordinances to reach the City Council by March 30. It which will include plans for additional new technology.
Technology being considered includes a pay-by-phone app, a new parking permit system, and a switch from pay-by-space to pay-by-plate options for those parking in the city.
Once the City Manager’s office submits its plan, City Council will hold meetings with the opportunity for public comment through its Traffic and Parking Council subcommittee.
The City will also release a parking plan with the Worcester Red Sox in early April to address game day and event parking for Polar Park.
